The University of the Witwatersrand & the University of Edinburgh Masters by Research Sustainable African Futures In partnership with the Mastercard Foundation Call for Scholarship Applications 2026. This scholarship is for the MScR Sustainable African Futures (online, full time) only. It does not include a PhD component.
The University of Edinburgh (UoE) and the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) are pleased to invite eligible scholarship applications for the MSc by Research in Sustainable African Futures. Please note that recruitment is for an online Masters programme only, and there is no affiliated funding for an associated WESAF doctoral programme.
The MSc by Research (MScR) in Sustainable African Futures will be delivered predominantly online and administered by the University of Edinburgh. All applications should be made through the University of Edinburgh admission portal. The MScR programme will provide the necessary skills to undertake advanced research through a structured programme of research training. Students will have the opportunity to undertake additional specialist research training (through courses and sustainability schools) alongside an independent research project.
The Mastercard Foundation is an international non-governmental organization established by Mastercard in 2006. The organization, which is based in Toronto, Ontario, has supported work in 49 countries.In 2018, Mastercard Foundation shifted to a specific focus on Africa, through its Young Africa Works strategy. Application Process for the MSc by Research Applications will open between 10th December 2025 and 2nd February 2026. UoE and Wits will recruit applications from a pool of early career researchers and staff in 14 African partner institutions. These partner institutions are:
