United States-South Africa Racial Justice Fellowship Programme for Masters & Doctoral Students 2023

The United States-South Africa Racial Justice Fellowship programme, funded by the U.S. government and hosted by the School of Education, University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) and Teachers College (TC), Columbia University, New York City, invites interested masters and doctoral students to apply for a nine-month fellowship. The programme seeks to drive and highlight productive ways of engaging with issues of race and racial justice through higher education institutions in both countries. This program will host 24 masters and doctoral students (12 from South Africa and 12 from the United States). The programme comprises 4 hours of online monthly engagements and a two-weeks in-person exchange. The exchange will see fellows spending a week at UKZN in Durban, South Africa and a week at TC in New York City, United States. Fellows will engage with each other and their communities through virtual monthly events, including forums for debate, knowledge generation, knowledge sharing, teaching, and skills building. The
intention is to support and build a cross-national community of scholars engaged in researching and addressing racial injustice in universities and society in general. The sessions will be facilitated by leading race and education scholars from both countries.
Applicants will be invited to identify a critical race-related issue they would like to tackle with the support of the programme and their home institutions. The programme requires a time commitment of at least 95% attendance.
