Fuzu Technical Internship for Graduate Kenyans 2022

In Kenya, the initiative is implemented through Deutsche Gesellschaft fur Internationale Zusamenarbeit (GIZ) and Expertise France. In Kenya, GIZ focuses on climate change related projects and planning at the sub-national level. Building on CoM SSA’s previous phases, since 2019 the focus of the programme is to move from planning to implementation and to expand the focus to attract climate funding at the local level.

The programme works through three pillars of action:

  1. Sustainable Energy Access and Climate Action Plan (SEACAP) Development
  2. Support to development of bankable urban infrastructure projects
  3. City to City/Regional partnerships

CoM SSA empowers its network of over 300 cities and subnational governments from over 35 countries across Sub-Saharan Africa to take concrete action in overcoming the effects of climate change and improving access to sustainable energy.

In support of the Covenant of Mayors in Sub-Saharan Africa (CoM SSA) in Kenya, the GIZ focuses on climate change related projects and planning at the sub-national level. Mombasa, Nairobi, Nakuru, Embu, Kisumu and Nyandarua counties are currently part of the CoM SSA network. GIZ works with Kenyan counties on meeting their commitment as CoM SSA signatories, through three areas of action:

i. Development of county climate and energy action plans

ii. Support to urban infrastructure projects through technical assistance for bankability

iii. City to city exchanges and capacity building

In this context, currently CoM SSA is carrying out project initiation in Mombasa County in relation to areas of

(1) renewable energy and energy efficiency in county-owned public buildings; and

(2) climate change adaptation through a participatory “Urban Local Adaptation Booster (Lab)” process.
