The Beit Strathclyde Scholarships have been set up to fully fund one student of exceptional academic calibre from Malawi, Zimbabwe or Zambia to complete a Masters degree in the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Strathclyde in the academic year 2026/27.
The Trust was established in 1906 by the Will of Alfred Beit, a financier, philanthropist and director of the British South Africa Company. He had many interests, including the development of the railway system in what was then Rhodesia. On his death in 1906, at the age of 53, he left a substantial legacy to a wide range of charitable causes. During his lifetime, Beit recognised that Northern and Southern Rhodesia (now Zambia and Zimbabwe) would be unable to attract sufficient capital for their own development. Students wishing to be considered for the BStrath Scholarship must be resident in Malawi, Zimbabwe or Zambia at the time of application, and must hold an offer to study for a one-year Master's degree in one of the eight departments in the Faculty of Engineering at Strathclyde:
Students must hold a good Engineering degree from a recognised University, and demonstrate the potential to rise to a position of leadership and influence in their home country on completion of their studies.
Applications for the Scholarship must be received by the Beit Trust by the stated application deadline each year.
